Birdies for the Brave
Last month, Matthew Belk and Chris Martinez, two of the four Co-Founders of BetterCarPeople, had a special opportunity to play with some friends in the 2012 Birdies for the Brave Golf Tournament. This event was held at TCP Piper Glen in Charlotte, NC. It was cold, windy and even rained a little bit. The weather was definitely not ideal for golfing but it wasn’t the main reason for our participation.
Birdies for the Brave was started by golf professional Phil Mickelson and his wife, Amy to support troops who were injured during combat. A donation was made to Homes for Our Troops and Special Operations Warrior Foundation for every birdie or eagle made by Phil during his golf season. Birdies for the Brave has grown and is now a PGA TOUR Charities, Inc. program. This program helps the heroic men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families.
Proceeds from this annual tournament aids homefront groups including United Through Reading, Homes for Our Troops, Operation Homefront and The Wounded Warrior Project, just to name a few.
The Birdies for the Brave event opened with a silent auction and lunch. Prior to the shotgun start, an official opening ceremony kicked off the event. PGA professional Frank Lickliter was on hand to hit a drive on a par 3 for each team. It was a great opportunity for our leadership to meet and hear his stories from the PGA tour. The BetterCarPeople team tied for 3rd. Golf was followed by dinner and the event concluded with an awards ceremony.
Even though the weather was not the best, the BetterCarPeople team had a great time and loved knowing that the proceeds were going to a good cause, helping those who have sacrificed so much for our country.
